Schadenfreude: taking pleasure in the misfortune of others...

There are some people in this world that I just don't like. Most of these people are famous. Most of the time these people have not done anything to me specifically but it is their fame that irks me. The fact that everywhere you look there they are is what bothers me. Paris Hilton is one of these people. She is famous for being famous. Another of these people is Andy Roddick.

Now admittedly Roddick has a better reason for being famous. He is a really good tennis player. He is ranked 4th in the world. But the problem is that he is too famous. Watching the U.S. Open today you couldn't help but notice that every time they went to commercial he was in one. Meanwhile Roger Federer (the horse I am backing) who has been ranked #1 for 83 straight weeks had maybe one commercial endorsement deal. Andy Roddick is easy to dislike. He is very cocky and I know some people who new him in high school and they said he was kind of an asshole. He is also very pretty guy. He is the Anna Kournikova of Men's Tennis. The main reason he gets the endorsement deals is because he is the best American hope to win the open. I guess the hopes are crushed. You see he lost yesterday. In the first round. In straight sets. Against a player ranked 68th. On his birthday. This guy didn't just go down, he went down hard. It's not even funny anymore, it's just sad. I feel bad for not liking him. But he will eventually do some other asshole thing and I will be able to not like him again. Here's hoping he hurries up.

To read about his spectacular loss click here:

With 83 straight weeks at #1 Roger Federer has the 7th most consecutive weeks at #1. Pete Sampras has the most with 286 weeks.

You May Have Won The Battle....

I am now back home having had to leave behind my friends in kingsville for the time being. But I will return and there will be much returning by me. Oh yes. Much returning. Meanwhile I arrive home to find that 16-year-old-FESt has once again invaded my home. My sister is having a party and I am now fighting a musical battle against them. They may be winning the volume level but armed with Against Me, Say Anything, and some new Coheed songs, I am definately winning in quality.

So once again into the breach dear freinds... 6 Days and counting till I return.

Apple blunder gives Gates iPod royalty
By Katherine Griffiths in New York
Published: 14 August 2005

Apple Computer may be forced to pay royalties to Microsoft for every iPod it sells after it emerged that Bill Gates's software giant beat Steve Jobs' firm in the race to file a crucial patent on technology used in the popular portable music players. The total bill could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

Although Apple introduced the iPod in November 2001, it did not file a provisional patent application until July 2002, and a full application was filed only in October that year.

In the meantime, Microsoft submitted an application in May 2002 to patent some key elements of music players, including song menu software.

Apple and Microsoft were two of several companies that developed portable players, but the iPod, with its sleek design and user-friendly controls, has dominated the market.

IPods make up three of every four portable music players bought in the US and account for almost one-third of Apple's sales. Piper Jaffray, a US analyst, believes Apple will sell 25 million iPods this year, bringing the total sold in the four years since its launch to 35 million.

In July, the US Patent and Trademark Office rejected Apple's application, saying some ideas were similar to an earlier application filed by a Microsoft employee, John Platt.

The dispute, which emerged this week on the closely watched website, Appleinsider.com, could lead to Apple having to pay a licence fee for the technology of up to $10 a machine.

David Kaefer, Microsoft's director of intellectual property licensing and business development, said: "In general, our policy is to allow others to license our patents so they can use our innovative methods in their products."

Apple has signalled it will resist the move. A spokeswoman said Apple would continue to try to get its patent recognised. The company could take the case to the patent office's appeals board. "Apple invented and publicly released the iPod interface before the Microsoft patent application was filed," it said in a statement.

The battle comes as Microsoft is squaring up against another competitor, Google. Microsoft last month launched a lawsuit against the search-engine giant, accusing it of poaching a top executive to head a new research laboratory in China. The Redmond, Washington-based company also sued the executive, Kai-Fu Lee.

Erotic images can turn you blind

Researchers have finally found evidence for what good Catholic boys have known all along. That erotic images make you go blind. The effect is temporary and lasts just a moment, but the research has added to road-safety campaigners' calls to ban sexy billboard-advertising near busy roads, in the hope of preventing accidents.

I always knew it.

Frustration

So my band played Thursday night at EqualEyez. Some of you have been there.
It was one of our best shows. Problem was, we played for about 6 people. Though we were on the calendar, the band before us was unaware that we were the last band and declared themselves to be the last band. They are called Kids Like Us and they are a pretty good band, and two of the members stayed to watch a couple of songs when they realized we got screwed out of an audience. We weren't all that sad, because the crowd was mostly full of hardcore kids that enjoy dancing. We don't play hardcore music. This venue really screwed us with scheduling, and frankly, they are one of the worst venues to book shows at.

About two weeks ago, we asked a band called Hindsight if we could play with them at the new House of Rock in Corpus, because they needed some bands to open for them. They asked us for band pics and a demo, citing that all they could hear was drums on our myspace recordings, which is true. We told them we were too ugly and too poor for either. They didn't enjoy that response and one of the members posted a blog about how some Corpus bands suck but could "make it" if they practiced harder. Considering this was posted about two hours after we responded, we assumed and are still pretty sure it was directed at us. As a band, we do not understand how having a nice picture of us and a good sounding demo would make our music any better. We aren't into music to "make it". That's not what the Corpus scene needs, because it really does suck.

My drummer's brother then asked a friend of his if our band could play a show with his new band The Golden Age. I was dissappointed to hear that the lead singer said he prefferred to play with a band that could start moshpits. When did support for playing good music fly out the window? When did not liking a band because they were too slow ever become a factor?

I want people to listen to our music, I don't want them listening for a reason to start a pit or do some crappy hardcore dance. I'm pretty sure that my band doesn't give a fuck if our songs don't make people mosh. That's what I like about them. They are accepting of all types of music.

Have any of you heard the bands from the Kingsville area? They are all completely different. Its insane. One band is all electronic, one is just wierd, there's some punk bands and metal bands, but if you ever check out the Radio Kingsville myspace, at the bottom, the first post is by a metal-ish Kingsville band asking us to support the other bands from the area, bands that sound nothing like them. That is support and makes for a damn interesting scene.

I just felt like venting.
Sorry for the long ass post.

How to Tie Your Shoes

You will need:

1. A shoe
2. your shoe laces
3. your hands

Procedure:

#1 First you take one shoe, and lace it up with your shoelace.

#2 To lace it up, criss cross your shoelace over and under the holes in your shoe.

#3 When the ends of your shoelaces meet take one end, lay the other down, then go over and under your laid down end.

#4 Take one end of your shoelace and make a loop.

#5 Take the other shoelace and wrap it around the loop.

#6 By doing that, you will make a smaller loop.

#7 Put the middle of the shoelace you haven't looped, through the small hole.

#8 By putting your shoelace through the hole, you make another big loop.

#9 Pull on the big loop very hard, this will make it tight.

#10 That's how you tie your shoe!

Extra Help to Double Knot!

#1 When you have two loops, you seperate them.

#2 Place one down, then hold the other in your hand.

#3 With the one in your hand, go over then under the one placed down.

#4 Pull tight! That's how you double knot!

Movie Review: Battle Royale...

I saw the most messed up movie today. It is so messed up it is actually banned in the United States. Imagine you take the characters in the Mexican soap opera "Rebelde" and you put them in a deserted island, give them weapons, and tell them to kill each other, that is the basic plot of the movie.

The movie is called BATTLE ROYALE. It is a Japanese movie. In it Japanese teenagers are so out of control that the government has implemented the "Battle Royale Act". It basically lets them take one 9th grade class and put them on a deserted island. They are told that they have one day to kill each other until 1 person survives. If after 3 days there is more than one survivor then the collars that have been locked around their necks will explode and they will all die. That is the basic plot of the movie and they get this out of the way in the first half hour. The other 90 minutes are just teenagers killing each other sometimes in very bloody ways.

What I liked about the movie:
1. The Premise- Very interesting premise It is sort of a cross of Lord of the Flies with Clockwork Orange. Its very messed up.

2. The Violence (not in a creepy I want to see Japanese school girls slaughtered way)- The violence was just so over the top that it was entertaining. It is sort of like Kill Bill. Supposedly this movie inspired Tarantino so much that he cast one of the girls as the killer Japanese school girl from Kill Bill.

3. The Characters - Some really cool characters. There is the real psycho girl who was mean in real life but given the chance just goes all out an really gets into the killing. There's also two people who are called "transfer students". One is a survivor from a previous class the other is someone who chose to be in the game. Both of them look so cool they remind me of the Turks from Final Fantasy 7.

4. The Music - A lot of classical music, especially in death scenes. Also influenced by the Final Fantasy series of games there is very dramatic music.

What I didn't like:
The humor. There was too little of it. For a movie with such over the top premise and violence a little more humor would have made it more digestible. As it is now it is just very weird.

I know there isn't much I didn't like of the movie but I thought it was good. Another bonus is you get to see Japanese school girls, Rennie. Actually this movie was made in 2000 and most of the girls (while not 18 at the time) are actually close to our age so I THINK its ok to look at them as hot (correct me if I'm wrong).

An interesting thing about the movie is that it was banned in the U.S. because of all the violence by kids against kids. This worries me because of the planned Ender's Game movie. Those kids are a lot younger and they do some messed up things. Anyway since it is banned in the United States I think it is ok for me to post the following. If you have a Bittorrent client here is where you can get the movie.

Otherwise they sell some versions of the DVD that are region free in eBay.

New Honda Civic...

Looks like somebody at Honda went to the Carlos school of design...

http://automobiles.honda.com/civics/email.aspx

What do I look like a Commie?...

There are a lot of arguments where the subject of socialism vs. Capitalism is brought up. Here is one of the more interesting ones. As you may or may not know some cities and towns have passed ordinances where the city provides free WiFi to all its citizens. Recently a couple of Senators have introduced a bill that would make it illegal for cities and towns to give away WiFi internet. The arguments for this bill would be that giving away internet would be unfair competition to ISPs. And free internet pretty much amounts to socialism and we all know how "bad" that would be. Then again its not like the governments doesn't already provide some services for free. Like education and healthcare...wait I'm thinking of Canada, but education is free. Also the name is just deceitful. They called it the "Broadband Investment and Consumer Choice Act." I mean if they really want to know if people are behind this why didn't they call it the "Anti-free Internet Act." I believe that if the voters of a city already agreed that they want their taxes to go up in exchange for free internet that the government should not be able to do anything about it, but of course I also believe that there are many other services the government should be providing. Some that are, dare I say it, more important than the internet.

What do you guys think?

Here's the link to the bill if you want to read it.
