What Really Happened!?
What are your feelings on the whole Gamespot/Gerstmann issue?
I'd love to hear. Personally, I used to like Gamespot a lot, but after really looking at both sides of the issue, I found that I really don't care for them anymore. Plus, I was really beginning to enjoy IGN more anyway.

So for those who don't know, Jeff Gertsmann is a reviewer for Gamespot who was rercently fied. After he was fired there were rumors that it was because of an extremely negative review he did for a game called Kane & Lynch. The makers of the game, Eidos, were a major sponsor of the site. In fact, the day he was let go, the entire site was skinned to promote the game. So the rumors were that his firing was a decision handed down from Eidos.
Now if this were true this would severely compromise Gamespot's journalistic integrity.
I have stopped being a regular visitor to the Gamespot site for a while now. Mostly because I really don't have the time or money to play videogames anymore but also because I haven't really liked the way they discuss videogames. I mostly get my videogame news and reviews from the podcasts at 1up.com.
As far as Gertsmann goes, I can't really make a judgement. I don't really know what happened though his firing a day after the game's review, and the subsequent changing of said review does make it a pretty big coincidence.
I think all BIG review sites are compromised whether its for games, movies etc... For example what stops Rent.com for example from having the girls who sit at the front desk write the reviews during there slow times.
Second everybody is so unique in there own ways that it almost makes it impossible to write a review that appeals to everybody. Yes i know im walking into the well i tend to agree with him bullshit but as previously stated its bullshit. Nobody can honestly agree with EVERYTHING somebody else says and not be full of bullshit. If somebody calls themselves a movie fan, a game fan, then I would think that they want to experience the game for themselves if it sucks then he decides.
One example of a movie that got rated well and many will agree with me and many will disagree is "Lost in Translation". That movie blew so much in my mind its not even funny. I read great reviews about that movie EVERYWHERE. I hATE IT. Bored the living shit out of me.
As far as this gamespot shit. I dont think he was fired for giving the game a poor review... i think he was fired for saying dont buy the game. A review should read something like this... "In my opinion this was a poorly designed gamed for such and such reason. It shouldnt read this was a bad game for such and such reason DONT BUY THE GAME (last thing he said) its really really bad... now BRING ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTt
Eat Milk Gtg bye
I agree and kinda disagree with all of you. There are lots of review sites out there, and as a guy who was seriously considering checking out Kane and Lynch, I completely welcomed an honest review. If someone tells me don't buy it, then I listen, and I'll rent it instead. By the way, Gertsmann did add that checking it out is still an option for gamers. Eidos should have some blame put on it for its aggressive advertising and for removing its adds on Gamespot. Gamespot also shares blame for not being completely honest with everyone and for not allowing a review by one of THEIR REVIEWERS to remain as such.
I don't want Siskel and Ebert-like reviews of games. I want whats really on the gamer's mind, and being "professional" doesn't mean i'm going to enjoy your review more. It just means you had to adapt your thoughts into something publishable by the company. F that. Tell me not to buy it. Who cares? I might buy it anyway. I might go read a review 42 seconds later that says to go buy a copy for everyone in my damn family. Reviews are opinions, there's lots out there, and I'll always appreciate honesty over professionalism.
Also, I like IGN, it reviews frickin everything from music to tv to games so its more like a media site to me. Penny Arcade, Destructoid and Kotaku are also good. I don't know why we feel like we have to choose sides on game review sites.
