See Crash...

Crash is the best movie about racism I have seen in the last two days. Ok I guess I can do a little better than that. Crash is the best movie I have seen about racism in a long time. Ok that may be too vague. The thing is there so few good movies about racism that it is hard to remember when the last good one was. Ok I got one. Crash is the funniest movie about racism since Blazing Saddles. That just about works.

Crash is not a comedy. It is a tragic mysterious drama. It also centers on the theme of racism. This is a difficult subject to talk about. It is hard to make a movie about racism without seeming overly preachy. Overly preachy means that it shows us how bad white people are and how bad minorities have it. By "minorities" I mean black people. I'm sorry that this is how it has to be said, but we have to admit that most movies about racism are about black people. Maybe if its been made since 9/11 it might be about people from the middle east (those are usually more interesting) but most movies about racism are about black people. If it sounds like I am tired of movies about racism towards black people it might be because I might be tired of movies about racism towards black people. Anyway in overly preachy movies we always end up feeling bad for the people in the movie or guilty towards some kind of feelings we might have. Crash is not this kind of movie. In fact Crash is the feel good movie about racism of the year.

The thing about Crash is that it shows us the truth. Everyone is racist (except the mexicans, they are the angels of the movie ;) ). We all tell jokes and make observations that may seem racist. What the movie seems to be saying is that it is okay to feel things about a general ethnic background as long as you remember two things.

1. Exceptions exist to every generalization (as you might or might not know not all business majors are retarded, just most of them ;) )

2. Be nice to people no matter what race they are. As long as you are not a dick it is okay to be an asshole.

At least this is what this movie said to me. You should really see it because it is such a good movie and I see now that it is really hard to explain.
