correct me if i'm wrong++::....

so yesterday i needed lighter fluid for my grill so i could make some burgers. anywho, so as i was waiting in line to pay for my stuff an older very fucking mexican dude with his tight ass cowboy jeans, gargantuan shirt and huge fucking hat asked the lady in spanish to put 20 dollars down (i know, how can a mexican have so much money!) in of course, spanish. now the lady was like "huh" because she didnt know any spanish, so the guy got pissed, threw the 20 bill on the counter and said again "pongale 20 en la 4!", and she still didnt get it. point being, the guy got pissed because she didnt understand him and he left storming and badmouthing her because some clerks in THE UNITED FUCKING STATES OF AMERICA DO NOT SPEAK SPANISH!!!
so mr fucktard, the language of the country is ENGLISH, not SPANISH. the next time you get all high and mighty about people not getting you is entirely stupid since you are in a country whose language is technically english.
and thats what ticked me off, its like me going to japan and get pissed off cause they cant talk any english! herro?! do u get mi?!
cheers

Crystal and I were just arguing about this yesterday. Its a very touchy subject for me. And its a lot of wrongs on all sides really. For example, the government wants the Mexican immigrants to learn English so they can integrate with society, that's all well and good. A lot of the immigrants are learning English and integrating with society. So thats great for them. Now there's a certain number of immigrants, I don't know how many of them, that either can't, or don't learn English. What do we do when they don't learn? Throw them out? I mean are they not integrating with society? Obviously the guy in your example is, since he has a car, and money. But does it mean that since he hasn't learned English he doesn't deserve his right to work?

Secondly, we have to get this in our minds, just because we are in America does not mean English is the official language. We are a nation of immigrants, and therefore, English was never established as the official language of the United States. To get Citizenship you need to learn English, but as for an "Official language" we have none. So they're technically doing nothing wrong. Sure its not hard to have a basic understanding of English (after all a "basic understanding" isn't requiring much of them either) but when you're in your 40's it gets difficult to learn a new language, and when you're barely making scraps and trying to make do for you and your family, where are you going to find the time?

I commend those that do find the time, and those that make an effort, but I do not condemn those that can't or don't. If they don't, then they're already being denied citizenship.

And finally, Fredo, my friend, my last comment is on you, I know, The USA teaches us to stay out of other people's business, but if you see that two people are struggling to communicate, why didn't you help? As a bilingual person you have a gift, and you could have used it to help both of them out, and you could have pulled the guy aside as well and told him "You need to learn English or you are not gonna make it in this place".

you know i actually thought of doing something, but i froze under the whole scene, i hate that, its always the same for anyone, you see a fight and want to keep yourself away from it. nonetheless, i wasnt trying to force a view on telling people to learn english. true, all this time i thought english was an "official" language, but now i know its not. nevertheless, he shouldnt have been such a fucking douche about the whole thing, i mean its not her fault and she had only english as her language, the guy had no reason to get pissed off like that and embarrass her in front of people. i know its hard to learn a language at a certain age, but i feel its courtesy to learn at least a couple of frases, such as toilet, beer etc, the basics so things like this dont happen. this is usa no matter what and a great majority speak english, as such you should not get all high and mighty when certain people dont understand you, its retarded. other than that, no one is forcing anyone to learn english, but like i said, its a courtesy to those around you to learn a couple of phrases in order to avoid scenes such as the one i witnessed and buckled on. i see you point ren, i was just pissed that had to happen to a woman that was just doing her job. that and i was afraid he was carrying a machete under the t-shirt.

Point 1: There is no excuse for doucheness. You can't go into another country and expect them to speak your language. If this was an American in France berating a clerk for not speaking English, well he'd never get out of there alive. He'd be drowned in spit.

Point 2: English is still not the official language and it never should be. What is the point? When I go to Brownsville I speak English and I have never gotten anyone telling me that they didn't understand. Its not the official but it is the unofficial primary language. I dare anyone to tell me that they can get a good job in the United States without knowing English.

So why do people care that English is not the official language? They say its because they're tired of being asked "For English, press 1." Apparently going tot he DMV and seeing a form in Spanish sends them into a rage even though the English forms are right next to them. I mean does that really bother them that much? Or is it just a way to please there inner xenophobe?

Blogger evil ferret of doom said...

only that in this situation the minority got pissed at the majority. i really think english is a sort of "unnoficial" main language since, well its what most people speak. now in brownsville yeah you can speak both, since its a border town, same like laredo, tijuana, el paso, etc.
over here we far (though not very) from a border town where there are less people that speak spanish.
now i dont know who gets bothered by having forms in both languages, there at least you have a choice that can cater to your need, with that being said, im still pointing out how wrong the idiot was for demanding someone to speak his language when she was not exposed to it, just like him.
as for the spit, yeah hed be drowned.
cheers

that should bring everyone around to the deal with arnold S.. whatever. the part where he told a whole bunch of latin radio stations that the population that speaks spanish will never learn to speak english if they always stick to watching tv only in spanish. by always speaking and hearing spanish, they will never pick up english. You can imagine the extreme reaction of everyone to his comments. but let's face it. he has balls. and a point that makes sense. (of course they couldn't help commenting later on his own terrible accent and english)

But that's the thing, Arnold is complaining that immigrants aren't making an effort to learn english because all they do is watch spanish television. Which is a ignorant generalization. I wouldn't say he has balls as more, he isn't doesn't really know about the immigration issue. If he thinks all immigrants just watch Spanish TV, then he is wrong. If he thinks all immigrants just spend their time in a pure Spanish environment, he's part-wrong. Sure they will spend their time in what is familiar, but it is damn near impossible to keep away from English, even in a border town. Also, and the most important point of all, not all immigrants and Mexican. A large portion of them are from Asia, Europe, and Africa as well. Why are they always pointing the finger at us?

Blogger ingenium said...

And before carlos gets smart on me, yes, I do mean other immigrants have a hard time learning english as well....just covering my bases. ;)

They point the finger at us b/c they assume we don't know English so is it not rational they assume we don't know sign language?

on the same note, this is true, just today again, i went to walmart, anyways the 20 items or less lane was occupied by 2 mexican ladies who had 3 carts piled pretty fucking high on the same lane. someone told them that it was a lane for 20 items or less and to look around, so they did and promptly replied "nonono i got here first" to which the lady telling them in spanish, "but it says that right there" to which the ladies replied "how can i believe you?" and bible truth they stayed there until a group of people complained and the attendee told them to go to another lane in spanish, to which pissed off they acceeded. same principle, different thing, only this time the clerk knew spanish, now what would have happened if she didnt? what kind of scene would that have created? im saddened theres no cure for stupid. yet again, they are living here, get with the program, take someone who at least has a basic understanding of the language, god the fucking number 20 gave it away!

Here's a question. How many of you like reading in Spanishon the tv? I mean actually go to the trouble to do so. And just for argument's sake, why is it that all bathrooms and other public places have to put a sign up in both english and spanish, but not in chinese or arabic. You say other immigrants have the same trouble, so why do they not need signs in their language?

11:21 PM
Blogger Oscar said...

I haven't really traveled the United States so I don't know how it works in other places. But I assume the signs of the bathroom reflect the population of the people. Mexicans (and I use the term loosely) have become the largest minority population in the United States. And most of them speak the same language.

The thing is not everyone from Europe speaks the same language. Not all Asian immigrants speak the same language. But every country except one in Latin America speaks Spanish.

Also, does it really bother you to see an en español equivalent right next to the english form? If so, why? What is the big deal? Even if immigrants have a basic understanding of english, they would much rather read in spanish, its easier for them, quicker, and things get done a lot faster.

this whole language debate has no end, sort of like religion, which we all know the universe was born as a sneeze. plus the earth is flat.
with that said the whole point to the story is again, people should not get pissed at other because they are not understood. everyone has their own language, the difference is that we have to adapt to where we are.

If you are going to immigrate or work in another country you should make the effort to have a basic understanding of the primary language. I wouldn't move to France or Holland and not make an effort to learn the language. It only makes life easier for the immigrant when they try and integrate into the society. Hell I moved here and had to learn American, I try and speak the Queens English and y'all give me funny looks :p

this is an endless debate. But i can't help but still comment. I have done a lot of traveling. I have been as far as Connecticut and New York. My father has been even farther. Even up north (except in Chinatown hehe) the two languages in public places are english and spanish. I must agree that the language may change one day with so many immigrants coming to the U.S.. O and I also agree that it is more comforting to read and speak in one's own language. Which is why i have yet to learn a second one tee hee.

sort of what cindy was saying with the whole idea of people being raised in a pure "your language" enviroment. i agree with no catering to the needs of the few, there is a vast majority here in this country that can speak english and teach english to others. look at the chinese, as soon as they come down from the boat they can take your order and give you tea. (i know that was a stupid generalization and i am sorry for the asian community... sorta)

I agree and disagree,

yes the immigrants should learn english, yes the ones that don't should be chastized and they are, but I don't understand why this is an issue due to the fact that they already are denied citizenship if they don't have an understanding of english, and the fact that English isn't an official language. If they want to become citizens and learn english alright good for them. If they have learned to thrive in an all spanish environment and haven't been caught by the border patrol, good for them too. What is the big deal? are they taking our jobs? I certainly don't think so. (well maybe mine since i'm jobless and I wouldn't mind tiling, painting, and construction)

I'm not pissed that they don't learn... I frankly don care if they learn or not. what I'm pissed off about is, immigrants feeling that this country and it's employees owe them, speaking Spanish (or any other language for that matter), teaching in Spanish at schools, that they feel that it is my obligation as a taxpayer to cater to their "needs". Why is my money being spent to deteriorate the little ambition left in the population of this country by handing people everything they need on a silver platter? this is the reason we graduate one of the lowest amounts of scientists and engineers in the world.
If immigrants can find a job good for them and if their boss speakers English them great for them, just don't be pissed if thiner coworkers speak English and/or they can't find a job for lack of speaking the unofficial yet predominant language of the country.
