i have realized that i have become a video game junkie... i went to game stop last week feb 21st to be exact and demanded to get Star Ocean: TLH the guy at the store goes... "we don't have that yet" and so i reply "yeah i know but like you don't have it in the back or something" so the guy tries to look cool in front of his buddies and says "whoaaa it does not come out until next week..." so i interrupt and say "yeah i know march third" so he proceeds "and if we had it i would not be able to sell it to you it would be illegal" so his buddy replies "you could get fired" at this time i'm like wow did this just happen... so my nephew who i asked to meet me there so that i could buy him GOW2 cuz it was his bday has the same facial expression as me... the guy is still worried about his job and loosing it and all this and that so all i say is "dude, shoul've gone to college"

well two days later i go to another game stop and guess what i buy indeed on feb 23 i bought Star Ocean: The last hope!!! indeed i felt like a nerd... the game is cool but the way they designed the story kinda sucks the play it's aite...

Tips For Clueless People Who Get Mugged

So you've just moved into a new "gentrifying" neighboorhood that's full of urban culture, cheap(er) rents, and wonderful friendly people. An odd lack of organic food stores and greenmarkets, but you can't have everything. So one day you're doing something FUCKING RETARDED like walking back from the store alone at 1 am or walking home from the subway while texting your sorority sisters back in the fucking midwest or something while SIMULTANEOUSLY listening to an ipod with the bright white headphones and you get fucking mugged. Congrats, YOU'RE A FUCKING DUMBASS. No, it's not 1990, when men where men, crackheads would fucking cut you and the robbery rate was about a billion times higher than it is now, but it's still new york and you were still fucking dumb enough to think that paying $1200 for a studio in a shitty neighboorhood is somehow hipper than moving to fucking Queens.

Anyway, here's some helpful tips for the next time someone jacks your shit.

1) Pay attention. Granted, you weren't paying attention to start with or you wouldn't have gotten mugged, but now that you've been hit from behind / had a gun shoved in your face, pay attention.

2) Follow directions. Give the friendly mugger what he wants. Don't talk back or fight. In all likelyhood, you're a pussy hipster retard, and are, by NYC law, unarmed.

3) You've been paying attention right? Remember some simple things in this order: sex, clothing color, clothing type, headwear, and direction of flight.

4) Congratulations! You've just been robbed and you're still alive. What now? Well, don't go back to your apartment and call the cops thirty minutes later. Don't call your mom in Kansas and tell her first. CALL THE COPS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. You'd be amazed at how many people fuck up this simple step. Pay phones still exist as do 24/7 bogies. Go there, call the cops.

5) It may take a while for the cops to show up. The 911 system, at best, will result in a five minute wait before we're even notified. Then we have to drive there without killing anyone. Be patient. For that matter, tell the 911 operator exactly where you are. Nothing makes a responding cop happier than having to scour the area for your dumb ass while the perp gets away.

6) Resist the temptation to curse/complain/bitch about the cops while you're waiting for us to show up. We're probably busy. Even if we're not, don't expect us to come tear-assing across the precinct lights and sirens to get to you 2 minutes sooner. I have no intention of broadsiding a livery cab and getting fired just because you got your sidekick took.

7) When we do arrive: get in the car, tell us what they looked like and where they went. Something simple. "AGE/RACE/RED HOODIE/BLUE JEANS/NORTH ON BROADWAY" Really all we need.

8) We are now going to "canvass". Get in the fucking car. We aren't going to get you shot you fucking pussy. Also, comments like "I can't believe this happened to me" or "I'm in shock" or "OH GOD WHY"- shove it. Save it for the bar later. If you haven't actually gotten shot, shived or stomped grow a fucking pair and close your mouth.

9) We are now going to drive around and try to arrest someone. Quick con-law refresher for the lib hippy types: if you're in my car, and have given me a description, THAT MEANS WE ARE STOPPING PEOPLE WHO FIT THAT DESCRIPTION. If you told me they are violent or armed, it's probably going to be a felony stop. So when you tell me it's a 15 year old black kid in a red hoodie with a silver pistol, don't be surprised when the car slams to a halt and we jump out and stop a 15 year old black kid in a red hoodie. I am not violating his rights, I am not hassling him because he's a minority. I'm stopping him because YOU GAVE US HIS FUCKING DESCRIPTION. If the kid is not the one who robbed you, he'll be on his way in five minutes. On the other hand, if he is the one who robbed you, he may decide to run/fight/pull out a gun - you don't stop suspected armed robbers by asking pretty please. If this offends you, get the fuck out of my car and go find the guy who mugged you yourself.

10) We failed to find your robber. No surprise: they've probably done this before and had an escape route all planned out. They were probably back in their apartment / subway / taxi before you even called 911. Don't bitch. It happens. This isn't Law And Order.

11) Yes, you are coming back to the precinct to make a fucking report. I'm sure the CO, Kelly and Bloomberg would be fucking thrilled if you didn't make a report as this helps the compstat stats (you watch the Wire, right?) but if I did all this fucking work, you're taking 30 minutes out of your day to make a god-damn report. Also, after you've finished venting about how we're all corrupt, racist, incompetent morons who probably got bullied in High School, you'll remember that you need a police report for your credit card companies, and you'll show up the next morning with a sheepish expression and ask to make a report. Let's do this now while the memory is still fresh.

11a) "You'll never catch the guy", "I don't remember much" and variations thereof are just insulting. Our detectives have been doing this job for years, and despite what TV/Movies taught you, only a small fraction are burned out alcoholics. They probably are going to catch this guy... eventually.

12) No racial language please. The odds are good you just got robbed by a black or hispanic male, and your buried-deep racism may be bubbling to the surface (especially if you're an out of town transplant / college student). The majority of the co-workers on my shift and in the DT squad are minority. It's embarrassing when you use racial slurs in front of them. Amazingly, most cops aren't racist, although we do have a universal contempt for crackheads, gang members, and dumbass white people.

In conclusion: Don't be stupid, pay attention, call the cops, and don't be a dick.

so since we put song recommendations that i doubt get observed i will try and sway you to a band that's rather cool.
the band is called Forgive Durden and the cd is Razia's Shadow A Musical
its literally a musical with so many musical guests including the likes of casey crescenzo (from the dear hunter), max benis (say anything), chris conley (say anything), lizzie huffman (man in the blue van), brendon urie (panic! at the disco), nic newsham (gatsby's american dream), john gourley (portugal the man) and many others.
point being, the cd is a masterpiece, i cant even get enough words to place what they did with music, its just a great balance of symphony, vocals from every angle at the same time and a badass story.

I was reading an article I found on digg. I laughed so hard when i read the last line!!!

If he wins, however, there will be a different challenge. He will have to return, full force, to the inspiration business. He is undoubtedly as ego-driven as everyone else seeking the highest office — perhaps more so, given his race, his name and his lack of experience. But he has not been childishly egomaniacal, in contrast to our recent baby-boomer Presidents — or petulant, in contrast to his opponent. He does not seem needy. He seems a grown-up, in a nation that badly needs some adult supervision.

Today is blog action day, and the topic is poverty, so I figured I'd write something about the said topic….

How do we rid the world of poverty?

I don't think this is truly the question of we should be asking ourselves, but rather how do we improve the lives of everyone else. Poverty, sadly, will always be around because the economic principle of scarcity applies; resources of all kinds are scarce. To put it simply we do not have enough resources to produce all of the goods and services that anybody might like to have. Some of us may not know it, but clean water is a precious resource. A lot of us do not realize the advantage we have when we are able to drink clean water straight from the tap. I remember living in a place where clean water was privatized. In order to drink any water I had to buy two five gallon jugs on a weekly basis in order to have a drink. This wasn't really a big deal for my family who was middle class in Mexico. But for the poor families, clean water can put a strain on your budget. It would cost roughly 5 dollars a week to refill those jugs of water. In a place where roughly 40% of the population makes $550 USD annually, that is a big deal. In Mexico you can literally have a billionaire stand right next to a beggar. You can have state representatives with lavish salaries (USD $85,000 and more) and yet their constituents with only dollars a day. The income inequality gap is wide in Mexico. Although growing up in a border town opened my eyes to the hypocrisy of both countries.
I finally was able to move to the USA when I went to college, and this move opened my eyes to the income gap between the 50 states. We had a minimum, barely living wage of $5.15 an hour down in Texas, while New York city at least had a $10 dollar an hour minimum wage. We could justify this inequality with saying that New York has a higher cost of living than Texas, but even then I don't understand why Texas doesn't raise its minimum wage to better suit the needs of its working poor. I find it a ridiculous that a guy working full time retail in New York can make more than some salaried employees in Texas. I know what some of you might say, that if we raise the minimum wage, that things will become more expensive, and that by raising the minimum wage we'll all have to pay more money for essential items. Yes, this is actually true, raising the minimum wage to a workable living wage will inflate the economy, but the past few years we have seen our economy inflate without the minimum wage increase. This means that people have gotten poorer and were able to afford even less with their meager wages. Also if you increase minimum wage, right out of the bat you increase consumer spending. Families are able to afford more. This automatically puts more money into liquidity, thus combating inflation.
Really there is no way to rid the world of poverty. The rich will always be there, they will always control the majority of the world's wealth, in fact, I am sure even if we spread the wealth of the richest 1% around we would probably still have poverty running rampant. It is something we will always have to deal with as a world with limited resources. So how does one help those in developing countries, or even in a developed nation who are not as fortunate as the rest of us? In my humble opinion there are 5 simple rights that every person must have as a human being. These are not guidelines, these are not privileges; these are rights. Human rights, self evident, that we as a species should observe. When we see a culture, a city, or a nation that is being denied these rights, it is our obligation as human beings to stand up and demand of our leaders to preserve them. There are of course more rights that every person deserves, but right now I am only speaking in the context of poverty and how to get rid of it.

1. The right to food.

There is something wrong in the world when we have people starving in the world, yet here in America we have poorer states suffering from Diabetes because of high fat food and lower quality foods, and the richer states having less of a problem with their weight. I swear only in America could there be such a thing as a peanut allergy.

2. The right to shelter

Everyone in the world needs housing, if you cannot afford housing, there should be adequate government programs that house you and help you afford housing. I heard there was this great program in Australia that helps couples buy their first house by giving them money for their deposit. I think that is amazing.

3. The right to universal healthcare, affordable/free, and of quality

I cannot believe this is even an issue in America. Healthcare is not a privilege, it is not something only those who cannot afford it deserve, and healthcare is for everyone. A doctor should be able to help anyone and everyone, and should not be getting flack for it from some insurance guy. The system in America is disgusting and should be rectified immediately.

4. The right to clothing

this is pretty self explanatory, everyone deserves clothing, and new clothes, also not just those who can afford it. I find clothing to be the prime example of what's wrong with the world. Glorification of people who do absolutely nothing (Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein) whose worthless product drives prices up making it hard for people to afford the things they need. Lets not forget that people like Ralph Lauren are worse because they market their product as quality when in fact they're no better than wal mart clothing.

5. The right to life

This one is a bit general, but it means just about anything it could mean, everyone deserves the right to work, and if unemployment is too high, they deserve help from the government, they deserve the right to defend themselves and be given a fair trial and adequate representation from a competent lawyer, you shouldn't only be able to have a good lawyer if you can afford one. Also Habeas Corpus applies to everyone, not just Americans, everyone. Finally, if you are wondering if the right to life applies to a sperm that's reached to an egg…I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole. I personally believe in a woman's right to choose.

So there you have it, these are the five simple rights that every person must have in this world. If ever one person be denied these rights, it should be criminal. If we look away, then we are culpable as well.

My fellow Americans, your government has been hard at work over the last couple weeks drafting a 451-page bill filled enough provisions to make your head spin. Billed as a bailout for the country’s financial system, the “emergency economic stabilization” plan contains quite a few important provisions. To save you the trouble of sifting through all 451 pages, I’ve highlighted below some of the more important legislative accomplishments.

Sec. 325. Extension and modification of duty suspension on wool products; wool research fund; wool duty refunds. I think this means reduced tariffs on wool and wool products will continue through 12/31/2014. Good to know those who can’t afford their home heating bills this winter can bundle up with cheaper wool sweaters.

Sec. 317. Seven-year cost recovery period for motorsports racing track facility. This one should be popular with all those NASCAR fans with their C.P.A certification. Hard to tell much from the actual language in the bill, but it sounds like the government is extending the time some “motorsports racing facility” has to recover building costs. Whew, glad they got that one hammered out–our economy was surely doomed without it.

Sec. 503. Exemption from excise tax for certain wooden arrows designed for use by children. According to the text, this provision allows for an “exemption for certain wood shafts” from excise tax. The shafts are manufactured for use by children, but cannot be less than 5/16 of inch in diameter and must not be “suitable for use with a bow.” I guess that eliminates the shaft taxpayers received in the passage of this bloated bill.

Sec. 601. Secure rural schools and community self-determination program. This section takes care of the “Reauthorization of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000. Unfortunately, I have no idea what that means, but considering this section alone accounts for 49 pages of the overall bill’s text I can only assume it is something important. Forgive me, but I got lost when I hit the subsection that called for job creation in areas whose objectives would be to “control noxious and exotic weeds” while providing “improvements in forest eco-system health.” You can see how a regular guy like me could get lost in the “noxious weeds” of these 49 pages.

I’m sure you will be as comforted as I am to know that finally all the rural, wool-sweater wearing kids toting wooden arrows with no bows to the motorsports track are finally taken care of. Whew–What a relief!

I read a lot of financial blogs because I'm a grown up and it inspires me to save.

Well here is a good blog talking about the current financial crisis:

Over the last several days, many readers have asked for my take on the economic crisis. I’m not an economist - my opinion is just that of an average person who has read a number of economics books and talked to a lot of people from all walks of life. Here’s my humble take on the situation.

From Franklin Roosevelt’s first inaugural address, March 4, 1933 (please, listen in):

I am certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our Nation impels. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days.

Over the last two weeks, I’ve read countless articles and heard countless podcasts talking about financial apocalypse, spreading fear around like mayonnaise on a turkey sandwich. Most of the suggestions are maddening - I’ve heard previously rational people talking about pulling all of their money out of FDIC-insured bank accounts and putting them under their mattresses.

All of this is based on fear, not fact. Over the last few months, several financial institutions have failed, but in each case, the resources of those institutions were immediately absorbed by other companies or, in a few cases, by governmental buyouts. No one has lost a dime in a bank account. No one has lost a single cent of insurance coverage. Many large banks - like Bank of America - have already taken their losses from the subprime mortgages and rolled right through them, and they’re strong enough that they see this as a buying opportunity.

We all know the general storyline by now - these failures were the result of investing too much in bad mortgages. The truth is that no one knows how serious the actual problem is. No one. The ludicrous plan that Paulson proposed last week served one purpose alone - it gave him tons of cash to make sure that the banks run by his cronies wouldn’t outright fail. The truth is that he doesn’t know how bad it actually is. Neither does Bernanke. Neither do you, and neither do I.
The panicked talk, the whispered statements about apocalypse - they’re fear. Nothing more, nothing less.

I don’t claim to know what the “best” plan for resolving the situation is. My level of information about the true nature of the economic situation is extremely limited - and so is yours.

I’ll tell you what I do see, though.
I look out my window here in Iowa and I see the ongoing harvest of one of the largest soybean and corn crops ever - not the cropless Dust Bowl of the 1930s.
I don’t see a single person with a bank account that has lost their deposits, like my grandfather’s family did circa 1932.

I see people going to work, working hard and producing value for their wage, coming home, and buying the things that they need to keep their family going, which puts money directly into the economy.

I see unemployment barely over six percent, not the 25% rate at the time of FDR’s address.
I see industrial production still rising - in 1932, it had fallen by more than half in just three years.
I see a dollar that’s actually strengthening, not weakening, while the price of oil is down sharply from its highs earlier this year.

In short, I see a lot of things that make me optimistic about our ecnomic situation, a pretty stark contrast from the fear being peddled by some. I’m actually much more reminded of 1987, when banks were failing thanks to the Savings and Loan crisis and Black Monday, when the Dow dropped 22% of its value in a single day. We haven’t yet seen anything as worrisome as that, in my opinion - and that was just a drop in the bucket compared to the 1930s.

To put it simply, I’m still not worried a bit, and when I see the fear being bandied about, I’m reminded of FDR’s words.

So what have I been doing with my money as of late?
First, I haven’t taken a dime out of any bank. I haven’t seen any FDIC-insured bank account fail, and none have in the history of the FDIC.

Second, I actually maxed out my Roth IRA contributions earlier this month. Almost all of that money went into broad based index funds - namely, Vanguard’s Target Retirement 2045 fund.

Third, I haven’t made a single change in any plans I’ve had for investing other than the early Roth IRA buy. I’m still following my own game plan.
Now, ask yourself this. If you make any irrational moves, like pulling all of your money out of stocks, does someone profit from it? Of course they do. Your brokerage will make a fee from the sale, and a happy buyer out there will be glad to buy that stock from you at a nice discount. Fear is the best salesman, after all.
My sole piece of advice to you is this: don’t panic. Don’t make any hasty decisions. Sit back and get informed - and don’t just rely on one source for information, either. Get a bunch of different angles on what’s happening, from liberals and conservatives and moderates alike. If you’re worried about your money, do your own research and find out reasonable things to do with it. Take a serious look at what people who really know what they’re doing are doing with their money - in the last two weeks, Warren Buffett has invested $3 billion in General Electric stock and $5 billion in Goldman Sachs stock (an investment bank … weren’t we supposed to be afraid of those?) - he sees this current situation as an opportunity to buy, not sell.
And one more thing. Even in the darkest heart of the Great Depression, 75% of Americans had a steady job with a steady paycheck, which they steadily used to buy the things they needed. Those years also produced the Greatest Generation and an economic steamroller that ran through the last half of the Twentieth Century like a tidal wave.

It was true 75 years ago. It’s true now.
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

My favorite one right now is Vladimir Putin. Holy shit is he awesome. Vladimir Putin is so far the most extreme politician I could ever encounter. at the ripe age of 55 he has done it all. He has commandeered the KGB, HE SHOT A LOOSE TIGER, and he actually told the press that his retaliation against Georgia was not excessive. He said, "If someone punches us, we punch them right back in the face".

If that doesn't impress you, well today I found out that Putin was a black belt in Judo and he has decided to teach French president Nikola Sarkozy Judo.

No truer words have ever been spoken by a peremptory blowhard trying to fulfill the motherland's imperious wishes. But enough about my disdain for Mr. Churchill, if it wasn't for him, I'm sure WWII would've had an alternate ending. I bring him up because that quote inspired me. Not from a political standpoint, but actually from the view of sports. This Tuesday is the SuperLiga final, resulting from an all MLS final. New England Revolution against the Houston Dynamo; they faired well against some of Mexico's top teams; Pachuca, Guadalajara, Atlante, and Santos. Of course when something like this happens there's always a limiting factor. Derisive Sports Illustrated writers never want to heed to it in their criticism of the Mexican teams.

Well of course the Mexican teams are not going to do as well as the American teams if they [the Mexican teams] are in preseason and the American teams are in mid season! So far it seems that is the only way an American team can beat a Mexican team. The only time I have seen an American team beat a Mexican team, when all the top players were playing from both teams, was one time, during the World Cup in France. Any other time and it has been quite dolorous for the American team. I find it quite silly for two rivals not to meet under any other circumstances. I mean you wouldn't have the rangers and the celts meet under temperate circumstances would you? So lets have these silly squabbles cease until we actually see some freaking good games. I for one am going to look forward to the SuperLiga final, I will be rooting for NE Revs, I am a little disappointed that Chivas (Guad) didn't make it, but that is okay.

Okay now that most of my friends are on Twitter (there's still some of you missing, you know who you are), its time I introduce you to how I Twitter. Besides the awesome web interface (which I use at work) and the text messaging option (which I use on the crapper), I use a little app called Digsby. This is like Gaim (now known as Pidgin) but with some of the features that made me go back to MSN Messenger. For example, it will keep track of my Hotmail like MSN messenger. I can also tell it to keep track of my Gmail account. And not only does it tell me the Sender and subject of each email I receive, I can delete emails right from the Digsby interface. It also lets me keep track of whats going on with my twitter friends without having to check Twitter.com every 15 minutes and has support for Facebook feeds (it also has Myspace support too for those that are into that kind of thing). If you're looking for an all in one Instant Messenger, I suggest you give this a try cause its much more than anything else.

P.S. This software is a beta. I've been using it on my computer without causing any damage but it has hogged my RAM every once in a while. Also it currently does not support previews for Hotmail but that will be coming back in the next update which is supposed to be coming up soon.

Well as some of you have already known, for the past year I've been living in Houston and I've gathered a few more experiences that I would like to bitch about. Now don't get me wrong I loved living in the US, it was a lot of fun and I met some really great people and made a lot of amazing friends. Not to mention all the different types of food I tried. I would also like to make a note that I bitch about everything and not just the US, but I like to bitch about things that everybody has experienced in order for it to be funny.
Well during my stay in Houston I bumped into all sorts of funny questions or comments people would say. Like for instance:
"You're Mexican?"
"I bet you don't want to go back"
"How come you're so white?"
and so on...

I also like to think of my stay here as showing people the truth about Mexico and that it is not as bad as they think.

One of the things that ticked me off though was the fact that people call this country "America". While I was working in the Emergency Room one of the nurses answered a phone call and the person calling was speaking in spanish, and the nurse says "this is America... We speak english here". That really pissed me off. Now on a side note it also pisses me off that there are people that have been living in the US for many years and THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH. I mean WHAT THE HELL!!! I'm not even a US citizen and I know how to speak english. And not just that NOOOO, they demand for people to speak their language. That's stupid
Anywho... So the nurse says "this is America"... Well last time I checked America is a fucking CONTINENT not a country. And wait wait it get's better.... IT'S TWO CONTINENTS... NORTH America and SOUTH America.
Here's another thing that pisses me off... Where do people get the idea that Mexico is part of SOUTH America!!!! HAVE THEY EVER HEARD OF THE FUCKING EQUATOR!!!
And no ladies and gentlemen THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS CENTRAL AMERICA!!!
So even though this may be a little shocking because we may not be a first world county... We are still part of North America.

So think twice before you say "American citizen" because that's not very specific.

Annoying Application Events: ENTIRELY way to may things on the page. Facebook has so many applications it is flirting with cluttered.
Anyone can join: --People start advertising crap in a place i dont want to see advertisements and it turns into myspace
Pictures of People Drinking -- Possible Job Searchs and finds a picture of me drinking ahh
The Wall -- I never understood why this is so popular. Why would I want to post something for all of that persons friends to read as well? I always use messages more b/c usually my intention is that the person i sent it to reads it. Not billy bob and Ted. I am not saying that i care if billy bob and ted read it. I just dont know why they would.

The Arrested Development movie has been confirmed. The girl who played Maeby recently said this,

"I got a call from Mitchell Hurwitz, the creator, and he said "so have you heard about this movie we're supposedly doing?" and I said yes. And he said he was in and it was great. And Jason [Bateman], when he was doing all the Juno press, he basically just talked up [Arrested Development] the movie. He got the publicity going before anything was real. So Mitch talked to Ron Howard, who said he would direct it, and he's down. So I think Mitch was like, "I guess I'll write it then," and that's what I think he's doing now. And yes, I'm involved. I think everyone is."

OK so its not exactly official yet, but this is very good news.

For those of you who never watched Arrested Development, it was one of the funniest shows ever. It involved a crazy family that tries to get along. I know that sounds like the most boring premise ever, but this show involves jokes about incest, matricide, patricide, hands getting eaten by sharks, pirates, racist puppets, blue man group, Iraq, the British, a whole lot more.

Dianosis Summer Movie Preview 3 (The Finale)...

Again sorry for the lateness but its the last week of school and all my projects are becoming due and past due.

Before I covered movies that I was excited to see and movies that might be good. Now I am going to cover the movies that don't really look good. Now because of the fact that during the summer you usually only see one major release per week, it probable that I might end up watching some of these movies, but I am still calling it...

Movies That You Probably Couldn't Pay Me To See

1. Speed Racer

Now this has become an interesting choice lately. Its already hard to put this movie on this list because of the involvement of the Wachowskis (you can't call them brothers anymore since one of them had a sex change, no joke). These guys made The Matrix and V for Vendetta, but it becomes a whole lot easier to do this since they also made The Matrix Too and The Matrix Returns (or whatever they were called). But then, I find out that Ren went to a sneak preview of this movie and he says its good. So I might just give it a shot. Still I can't deny that it looks cheesy. And when you go from a cheesy cartoon to a cheesy movie and you actually make it look cheesy on purpose, that might be too much cheese.

2. Bangkok Dangerous

This is another movie that almost went on the maybe list because it is a remake of a Hong Kong action movie that is supposed to be good, but I've never seen it. Also Nicolas Cage has been disappointing lately (its hard to believe that he was a Ghost Rider fan after he ruined that character). But his movies never look that good so look for this one to maybe be a surprise.

3. Stepbrothers

I like Will Ferrel and though I have disliked a lot of his movies, I can see how some who maybe have ingested too many drugs might like them. But I really really dislike them. Another movie with John C. Reilly where he plays an ignorant man-child, its just not my cup of tea.

4. The House Bunny

Someone who is my cup of tea is Anna Farris. She is usually funny and attractive in a weird way ("attractive in a weird way" is my favorite kind of attractive). This movie, though, looks like another hot girl helps the socially awkward become less awkward and everyone learns a lesson. So I probably won't be watching it.

5. Sex and the City

I am not going to argue with anyone about whether this show is good. I didn't have HBO when it started and when I did watch it, it never did anything for me. I don't hate the idea of watching this movie but its just probably not going to happen.

6. Mamma Mia

Look, I like musicals. When I saw Chicago, I was surprised by how much I liked it. I watched The Producers and liked it. I'm even curious to watch Hairspray. So it has nothing to do with that. I can even appreciates ABBA's ability to make songs that get stuck in your head (whether you want them there or not). But the plot of a girl trying to find out who impregnated her mother, Meryl Streep, before her wedding. It just sounds too much like a cheesy french comedy. Not for me.

7. The Sisterhood Of The Travelling Pants 2

I have been accused of having the tastes of a teenage girl before (anyone watch Gossip Girl lately? anyone? Beuler?) but this is a sequel to a terrible movie for teenage girls who get off on girl power and sappy romantic stories. All the actresses in it could do way better.

10. You Don't Mess With The Zohan

Eddie, Mike, Adam, have a seat. You remember when you guys were in Saturday Night Live? Man those were the days. Sure, Eddie is the only one who ever reached the greatness of Bill Murray and Phil Hartman, but you other guys did some great stuff too. But at some point you all lost it. Adam, I think it was when you became a republican and started making fun of the gays and the foreigners. Mike, you lost it when you met Verne Troyer. I don't know how he did it, but that drunk midget sucked the greatness out of you and replaced it with a need to make a quick buck from doing funny accents. Eddie, I think, like Iron Man, you need a special suit to be great. Only instead of iron, your suit is made of leather. Try out that leather jumpsuit again. See if it still fits. Maybe do some stand-up. Say FUCK again. Its not that bad. Just please stay away from the rubber suits and multiple characters.

And the movie there is no way I am ever going to watch is...

11. The Longshots

Four words: "Directed by Fred Durst."

So that's the end of my lists. I think 6 good movies and 12 maybes is a good number. It looks like its going to be a good summer. Here's hoping I can watch all of these and I'll try to let you know what I think.

My list of movies that MIGHT be good but time will tell

1. The Strangers

I almost put this in my excited to see list because of the following picture:

Man that movie looks creepy. Still seeing as how I haven't really heard of this movie at all it could go either way.

2. The Incredible Hulk

So I really liked the first Hulk movie. I enjoyed its artistic style even though it had little action and the super-villain plot didn't make much sense. So this movie could be bad if they decide to dumb it down. Then again Edward Norton is heavily in the movie and he's made really good movies in the past. On the other hand he was supposedly acting like a complete tool for the entire making of it.

3. Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

I really liked this book but for some reason I never went to watch the first movie. So I can't really recommend it. Still, it looks good.

4. Kung-Fu Panda

Dreamworks animated movies tend to go either way. If the jokes are funny and the kung-fu is cool, this could be a must see.

5. The Happening

M. Night Shyamalan has made some really good movies and he has made some huge pieces of crap (sorry Carlos, I didn't like The Village). I am probably going to give it a shot if there is nothing else to watch.

6. Hancock

The premise of a drunk asshole super-hero sounds like a really interesting movie but I am afraid it might not go dark enough which would make this kind of like My Super Ex-Girlfriend.

7. Get Smart

The original show was written by Mel Brooks. If they keep his humor more than they pander to families with cartoony humor and kids saying cute lines, then this could be a good movie.

8. Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Its Star Wars but if the live action movies felt to kiddie friendly then what will an actual cartoon be like? The 15-minute Clone Wars cartoons were really cool though, so if they focus on Jedi action this could be awesome.

9. The X-Files: I Want To Believe

I was a huge fan of The X-Files, but I never watched the last season. This could be good or bad. I just don't know.

10. Tropic Thunder

This has got to be the strangest comedy coming out this summer. Robert Downey Jr. plays an actor who dyes his skin to play a part written for a black guy. That sounds terrible and funny at the same time. Ben Stiller is the lead though but hopefully he'll not be playing the same part he's been playing since There's Something About Mary.

11. What Happens In Vegas

I want to hate this movie but parts of it sound funny. What can I say?

12. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

I don't really think we need another Mummy sequel, especially in a year with Indiana Jones playing but Jet Li may save this movie if they don't CG him too much.

So with Iron Man opening this weekend, it seems like the Summer movie season is starting earlier and earlier each year. There are a lot of movies coming out soon, some of which look awesome, some of which might be good and some that just look down right terrible. So here are my lists for the summer...

Movies That I Think Are Going To Be Awesome and I am excited to see

1. The Dark Knight
2. Wall-E

It is hard for me to say which I am more excited about. Batman will finally fight the Joker in The Dark Knight but all the trailers for Wall-E have been hilarious and moving making me think that its going to be another Finding Nemo.

3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Another Indy movie! This movie would be atop my list if it weren't for George Lucas' early success in destroying my childhood fantasies for sequels. And Shia Lebouf is starting to annoy me.

4. Pineapple Express

The guys from Knocked Up and Superbad make another stoner comedy only this time with more overt drug references. I'm there. Only problem might be that I think people are tired of Judd Apatow comedies so it might be difficult finding people to go with.

5. Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Looks like a beautiful melding of Pan's Labyrinth Guillermo del Torro and Blade 2 Guillermo del Torro. I liked the first one and am mostly going to see what kind of wierd creatures Del Torro puts on the screen.

6. Iron Man

On the list because I really do want to see it, but my excitement for it comes and goes so its at the end of my list.

I just read THIS story. Apparently, after the school shootings in Virgina Tech and elsewhere, students have been signing petitions asking to be allowed to take their guns on campus and some states are considering it, including Texas (of course).

As a guy whose job it used to be to repeatedly tell drunken idiots, who lived on campus, to turn down their music (as an RA getting paid minimum wage, not a trained police officer), I think I can speak for RAs and say, "Please do not let these drunken idiots have guns! So its spring break time in Kingsville but rather than spending my time and money at the beach handing out beer and necklaces to weak-willed women, I am spending the week at my apartment. I've really got to buckle down and work on the four giant projects that I have due by the end of the semester. It's OK though, because this past weekend I got more excitement than I really wanted. I mean how many sprint breakers can say they literally dodged a bullet.^*

I was at a party with my cousin and his band on Friday. The party was pretty much over, and all the bands had finished playing and they were putting their stuff away. Apparently, a couple of guys showed up and started throwing insults at the guys hanging out outside the house. When people started throwing insults back, one asshole pulled out a gun and shot two guys. Fortunately my cousin and I were inside the house at the time, but a friend of ours, the drummer for my cousin's band, got shot not 12 feet from where I was standing. At this point, I'm just going to skip ahead and tell that the guy's OK now, because the rest of the night is just the standard ambulances, cops, and driving to the hospital. Exciting stuff, sure, but most of that stuff is a blur (either because of the drinking or the freaking out).

*Okay so the correctness of the word literally depends on your definition of the word dodged. But when I am telling the story to girls in bars, I reserve the right to say "I literally dodged the bullet". Because in that story I will have done that as well as punch out the guy with the gun, and carried the guy to the hospital on my back while the house exploded behind me.

Okay, politics time.

I’m a political junkie, but I’ve largely kept that out of xkcd (other than occasional cracks about science and net-related issues). So this will be a one-time thing — after this post, you’ll hear no more political advocacy on this site for the rest of the election. But I think we’re at a balance point, where a few words between friends who are generally in agreement might make a difference, so here goes.

Please support Barack Obama.

I want, for once, someone I can vote for not because I dislike the other candidate, but because I’m proud of mine. Obama is the real thing.

Obama has shown a real commitment to open government. When putting together tech policy (to take an example close to home for xkcd) others might have gone to industry lobbyists. Obama went to Lawrence Lessig, founder of Creative Commons (under which xkcd is published) and longtime white knight in the struggle with a broken system over internet and copyright policy. Lessig was impressed by Obama’s commitment to open systems — for example, his support of machine-readable government information standards that allow citizens’ groups to monitor what our government is up to. Right now, the only group that can effectively police the government is the government itself, and as a result, it’s corrupt to the core. Through these excellent and long-overdue measures, Obama is working to fight this corruption.

Obama stands against bad governing not only in his support of specific practices like open data standards and basic network neutrality, but in his work against corruption from day one. He’s sponsored legislation to restrict gifts to Congress by industry representatives (which also carried a whole slew of anti-corruption measures that were a breath of fresh air). He’s fought against vote fraud. He’s been pushing for election and lobbying reform from the start, and in his campaign he’s refused to take lobbyist money.

Clinton has done nothing of the sort, and when questioned seems baffled that anyone would have a problem with what is, by any reasonable standard, bribery. I find her basic lack of integrity troubling, and I think as president she would continue fighting to maintain the status quo. It’s vital that we start the work of picking up the messes left by the irresponsible governance of the current administration, and, as they say, you don’t get out of a mess with the same kind of thinking that got you in. Obama is the guy to to get us out.

The Democratic party has a long, painful history of nominating unlikable, uncharismatic ‘default’ establishment candidates who are eventually swatted aside by the voters. Nominating Clinton would be continuing that tradition at the very time when we have a chance to do so much better. Let’s not let that chance slip by.

I want someone who can lead the country. When people grow cynical and detached from government, or blinded by partisanship, evil runs amok. Obama represents an honest shot at making our government something we can be proud of. I’m tired of throwing things at CNN. I’m tired of feeling depressed when I read speeches by the founding fathers. I want Jon Stewart to smile again. For a brief moment, next Tuesday, we’ll have a shot at finally getting things right. Please help.

Ours is a youth-centric culture and nobody is supposed to care about history anymore. But curiously, it's really quite amazing the attention that sports fans pay to legacy, to how their favorite has-beens rank for posterity. History is history, except for sports. And, with fans, the present is always playing the past. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all ... all-time?

All this is underscored at this moment because we find an absolute glut of brilliance. Is it possible that right now we have, plying their genius before our admiring eyes, yea, verily, at their peaks, the greatest professional football team ever, the greatest quarterback ever, the greatest tennis player ever and the greatest golfer ever?

Of course, part of the mania to designate superiority in sports is because sports are, after all, competitive. But it is also true that it is an article of sporting faith that athletes are always getting better. In no other area do we believe this. The greatest writers and composers and painters are all long dead — they don't make 'em like they used to. But inasmuch as the cliche tells us that records are made to be broken, then it follows for many that the record-breakers are bound to be better than all the erstwhile record holders of the past.

Only right now the empirical evidence suggests that maybe that sophistry really is so, that the New England Patriots are the best team ever put on God's green grass, and Tom Brady is better even than Johnny Unitas and Joe Montana, and Roger Federer and Tiger Woods have surely come down from Mount Olympus to toy with the poor mortals who would dare take them on.

Because heroes in individual sports are not dragged down by imperfect teammates, it's easiest to rate the likes of Woods and Federer. Since the preponderance of opinion now is that they both are indeed better than anybody who's ever picked up a club or a racket, since that's settled, the new parlor game is to argue: Is Federer more dominant at tennis than Woods is at golf?

It's impossible to choose, though, because the challenges in the two sports are so different. Woods can have a bad day and survive, but he can't stop some other golfer, otherwise a non-entity, like Zach Johnson, at the Masters last year, from getting hot and beating him without ever really playing him directly head-to-head.

Federer has to play only one man at a time, so he controls his own fate better, but also, unlike golf, there are no off-days he can recover from; one bad match and he's gone from the tournament. In the Australian Open the other day, in fact, Federer almost got taken down by tennis' own version of Zach Johnson.

Down under, Federer's seeking his 11th straight Grand Slam final. That's simply impossible. Even as I sit here and say those words, I think: He must get beat. Must. And Tiger can't possibly beat all the world's best golfers at all four majors. And surely it's only the law of averages for Brady to have an absolutely rotten day in the Super Bowl. And the Patriots are ripe to be upset.

But no, no, no and no. Sometimes, I guess, they don't make 'em like they used to because, in fact, they make 'em even better.

Damn You, Carlos! I watched a movie this weekend and I've been trying figure out how to review it on the blog. And then you go and review a movie so now I almost don't feel like doing it right after yours. But I have to. This is a Spanish film and if you DO have the opportunity to see it its probable that you won't have it for long.

This movie is playing in a lot of places. Its playing in Brownsville and Corpus so its probable that those that don't live in Austin can still see it, though its not in Kingsville but then again what is (actually Kingsville cheered me up recently cause Juno is here for some reason).

Okay so this great movie that you HAVE to go see unless you get scare easily is The Orphanage (or for our Spanish speaking friend El Orfanato).

So the reason I had trouble writing this review is that I don't know how to tell you how scary this movie is without spoiling the best moments for you. So I won't. So all I will say is the following:

THE ORPAHANGE IS ONE OF THE SCARIEST FUCKING MOVIES EVER MADE! THIS MOVIE GAVE ME THE CREEPS AND MADE ME WANT TO LEAVE THE THEATRE BECAUSE I COULD NOT TAKE THE CREEPY FEELING ANYMORE! GO WATCH IT NOW!

Okay there. One more thing I do have to say is that while this movie is scary it is not like Hostel or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There is no torture. There are only a few deaths. And most of those deaths serve the story and are tragic rather than funny.

the actual problems with hydrogen aren't the type of water that you use, but in fact, how we get the hydrogen molecules from the water. Currently we use to methods: Fossil Fuels and Electrolysis.

At present, 95 percent of America's hydrogen is produced from natural gas. Through a process called steam methane reformation, high temperature and pressure break the hydrocarbon into hydrogen and carbon oxides — including carbon dioxide, which is released into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas. Over the next 10 or 20 years, fossil fuels most likely will continue to be the main feedstock for the hydrogen economy. And there's the rub: Using dirty energy to make clean energy doesn't solve the pollution problem-it just moves it around. As a CO2 reducer, hydrogen stinks, ZING!

Most of the remainder of today's hydrogen is made by electrically splitting water into its constituent parts, hydrogen and oxygen. This year, a PM Breakthrough Award went to GE's Richard Bourgeois for designing an electrolyzer that could drastically reduce the cost of that process. But because fossil fuels generate more than 70 percent of the nation's electrical power, hydrogen produced from the grid would still be a significant source of greenhouse gas. If solar, wind or other renewable resources generate the electricity, hydrogen could be produced without any carbon emissions at all.

So there you have it, those are the problems in the production of hydrogen power. It actually has way more problems such as storage, distribution, and use, but I won't go into those. Hydrogen, I think seems more of a panacea than an actual solution. Maybe if someone developed a car that ran on photosynthesis?

Odds are that if you picked a random person from the USA they would probably be guilty of one of either of these two crimes: they either wouldn't admit that it is impossible for a baseball player to be better, faster, stronger when he is 42 than when he is 24 or they did not change the channel when CNN started reporting about one of the other three people on my list. So for making this list possible, America, you are the number 1 douchebag of the year. All Hail The King! I guess you see what I am trying to say. In 1977 there probably was no Kingsville movie theater but I can assume it would have gone just like this. Why? Because the Kingsville theater sucks. That is why it is so difficult to make my top movie list. Because I have wanted to see dozens of movies that sound funny and original and exciting but the Kingsville movie theater will have none of it. In fact with No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood, this is supposed to be one of the best years of film in a long time. But will the Kingsville theater show either one of those probable Academy Award contenders? Well they didn't show one, and I don't have high hopes for the other.

I really need to get out of this town...

Joey i think you would start that kind of movie by creating a "silhouette" atmosphere.

I believe you have to shine a bunch of lights behind the actors in order to have them appear as shadows.

I am responding to your response regarding your stance on videogames and art. Frankly I will try to be as civil as possible, but for starters I have to say I was staggered when I heard you considered them "inherently inferior to film and literature."

My guess is that what you are missing is a real immersion into the subject matter at hand. I believe you think all videogames are like the movies adapted from them. This is not true in any sense. Sadly most video game adaptations are only made due to the fact that the video game made huge sales. It is in no way related to the depth, imagery, or even storyline of the videogame.

What you fail to see is that there are many games out there with beautiful storylines, beautiful musical scores, and the work and detail that these computer scientists spend countless hours trying to make everything seem interactive, real, and lifelike; to hear you not call it art is insulting.

You also say serious film and literature requires authorial control, I disagree, as well as do a lot of modern artists, such as Chin Chih Yang who believe whether something is “art” depends on only the artist and the audience. I also find your argument perplexing since movies and comic books today still struggle with conservative artists and critics and are dismissed as just a past time rather than a “serious medium of art”.

If you believe that we, the videogame playing audience, fail to cite any real game worthy of comparison to the great dramatists, poets, filmmakers, novelists, and composers. I will be happy to assist you and name a few, but I am sure a lot of people have emailed before me, and probably have already named countless great games. So in my opinion, I will believe you will still stand by your opinion, even if you were to decide to play any of these games. I am sure you would still stand by your opinion.

One game that comes to mind that combines an excellent musical score, amazing storyline, and for its time, had redone the role playing game in terms of game play and graphics is Final Fantasy VII. The musical score was done by the famous Japanese composer Nobuo Uematsu. And the game was done by Squaresoft. Another game that comes to mind is Starcraft, done by Blizzard entertainment. This game is a Real Time Strategy game which players build and control armies and pit them against an enemy force. The artwork in this game was beautiful yet it wasn’t even in three dimensions. The Story had a compelling Plot and memorable characters, each unit you had in play had wonderful comedic lines that were filled with wit. Other games with higher literary focus are Star Control II and Planescape Torment. I also would recommend the game ICO where the atmosphere and environment are as much a character as everyone else. I find this game to be on par with any “serious” art film.

I don’t believe you have heard of any of these games, and I don’t blame you, a lot of videogames in general have been deluged with an endless parade of movie-tie-ins and flashy sequels that favor graphics over game play or storyline. But I believe that is the same thing for the movie industry. Or do you honestly believe SWAT and Transformers to be works of art?

I'm gonna waste my time on this, but I found some interesting info that I thought some of you might find pretty cool. So please bare with me. Okay, if any of you follow gaming news which i'm sure none of you don't (Save for probably neto), you might have heard the term "AAA game" being tossed around a few times. What is a AAA game? Assasin's creed is considered a AAA game, as is Halo. My most qualified guess is that the term "AAA" was invented by producers and/or publishers. Its the equivalent of Super-MEGA-sized burger meals or XXX porn movies. More is more and bigger is better. Its that simple. Though I am still positive that the first real XXX games will end up being AAA games as well. But thank God I am not the only one speculating about this.

Basically "AAA" refers to very large and expensive production titles, which include a highly productive PR/marketing apparatus. Several companies are now referring to their titles as having "AAA" potential, which is basically just to hype it up. In my opinion "AAA" is only something which makes sense after release, reviews and sales records. Or maybe it would be more easy to say that the definition of "AAA" is something that has sold at least a million copies? I don't know.

I found this insightful article from 1998 that dwelled into the subject matter a bit as well.

"...Presently, you have basically three types of games: AAA, A, and B games.

AAA game means games that have almost unlimited budgets and are media events. Blizzard is the AAA game company these days. They won’t release anything that doesnt fall under AAA.

They killed Warcraft Adventures not because it was a bad game but because it would have been only an "A" rated game. AAA, A, and B level games have nothing to do with how good the game is. If I wrote the worlds greatest space invaders clone today and even if it had great graphics, great sound, and was totally rock solid, it would still be a B class game. Only a handful of games each year make it out as AAA because the bar is so high to be a AAA game. It costs millions of dollars to create a AAA game. My personal favorite game, Total Annihilation, barely makes it out as a AAA game because it didnt have full motion video through out, the units didnt talk. Its a AAA game still but just barely. So even the best and funnest games may not be AAA games. Starcraft is a great example of a AAA game and Ill use it because its also an excellent game.

Games like Entrepreneur, Panzer General and Warlords III would be great examples of A games. They may be as fun or even funner than AAA games but dont have the budgets behind them of a Starcraft. No full motion video between every level, they are about the game, not the game and experience.

Deer Hunter is a great example of a B class game in quality. Cheap to make. And where Deer Hunter changed the world was in discovering that a B level game can now make as much money, if not more than a AAA game. And believe me, the game designers of AAA game companies are probably sweating a bit about Deer Hunter. Because corporations are about profit and if they can make more money cranking out B titles they will. But that’s for another discussion entirely.

Historically, AAA, A, and B games represented how much money youd put in and get back. A AAA game may cost a ton to create but they bring back the big bucks. They are the games of the year, they are the 2 million plus unit sellers. Myst, Dialbo, and Starcraft, these are AAA games..."

Pay attention because there are several elements to this post. Most of you know Penn & Teller the magicians/debunkers. These guys are funny magicians who also like to call things bullshit. They created a game for the Sega CD called Smoke & Mirrors which was a collection of mini-games. The most famous of these mini-games was called Desert Bus. According to them all the normal videogames don't really reflect real life. So they created a simulator for something you are more likely to find yourself doing. Driving a bus from Tucson, AZ to Las Vegas, NV. It is as boring as it sound and it is in real time. It is just you driving a bus for the 8 hours it takes to get to Las Vegas (or from Las Vegas to Tucson if you complete are driving back) to get the one point that earns you.

Also you may have heard about Child's Play:

The charity created by the guys who write Penny Arcade to have gamers show their support of gaming by donating toys and videogames to Children's Hospitals.

What do the two have to do with each other?

Well the crew of Loading Ready Run, an internet sketch comedy group is playing Desert Bus for 90+ hours for this charity. They set up the site http://www.desertbus.org and put the challenge out. They would be playing the game for donations. The more people donated the longer they would be playing the game. They have now raised over $6000 and have committed to play this game over 90 hours. And they have setup webcams for us to watch them do this.
