student-athletes::...

Ok, so at first glance I always thought athletes in this university have no brain. Now I am assured that they in fact have no brain.
Now here at work we have the lost and found cabinet, and in it I found an almost empty notebook that I intend to keep. Inside it, I found the GPA of one of our athletes. And its no surprise that it’s lower than a 2.0 and according to its attached transcript and letters he is not on academic probation. Strange isn’t it?
Furthermore here is a direct copy of the letter that was inside with the transcripts by a woman named Leslie Schuemann and a guy called Jason Henderson directed to all faculty advisors:
“Attached are the transcripts, degree plan and advising sheet for the student athlete. Please advise the student-athlete during early registration for Spring 2006. if the student-athlete has reached the fifth semester and does not have a degree plan, please assist the student-athlete in obtaining a degree plan and returning it to this office. NCAA guidelines require each student-athlete to complete a minimum of twenty-four degree accountable hours a year. Your advising expertise is needed to ensure this regulation is met. Thank you for your assistance and if you have any other questions you can reach is at extension 2500.”
(For all you spammers and whatnot, their phones are 361-593-2500 and their fax is 361-593-3488)
I mean, the “student-athlete” a word they mention like fucking 5000 times, is so mentally challenged, (ok fuck it, retarded, probably still in its anal stage) that he needs the university to hook him up with a major, financial aid and an advisor so that he can continue being a failure. Yet in this university failures are paid to go to college.
Which brings me to my debate of, why are athletes treated as gods when they do nothing for the benefit of humanity. They are just a placebo to forget about how fucked the world is, and yet they are overpaid and uneducated and take away the chance that someone smart and who really needs money to go to college away.
I say fuck their privileges, its not as if they’re doing research. To me they’re just a bunch of steroid pushing assholes who think they’re superior for handling a ball. Monkeys handle balls, and at the same time, distinguish shapes and can play monopoly. I prefer monkeys, its just me. Monkey.
cheers

Most of this University's Basketball & Baseball players are hard workers academically. (Note: Most) Football I'm unsure of, I haven't really had much enounters with the players themselves for football. It's unfair for you to claim that all athletes are uneducated. A lot of them don't hold a pretentious attitude to them either. Realize also that their games are sometimes what draws in the crowds and initially the money. Football for example, it is one the if not THE most expensive-funded sport on this campus. Whether you keep up or not, they have a very good winning track record as well. And you are helping pay for their "treatment as Gods" as you so exaggeratedly put it, because some of our money goes to their funding. If anything you are acting "superior" because you are talking down to and judging a classification of people you know absolutely nothing about except for the fact that you found an athlete's papers on his poor academic standing and decided to revel in this student's failures and have it speak for the rest of them who are just like him. That's very cowardice of you.

first of all, who the fuck are you? second, most of the peple i have encountered as athltes at the plce where i work at, are morons. yes, there are some who are hard workers, but most of them just hang at the sub and do nothing while i have to bust my balls to get a major while the others are just there having fun. i also think its stupid to be treated as royalty just because they haul a lot of money. well guess what, he chemistry departent hauls a lot of money too, the research at the biology department also does it. so your argumen fails. and of course i am pretentious, i am an enginer. what are you? bsuniess? english? and i do keep up, i know they win all games, last year they lost one game. now in respect to my money going for them, i am pised off they tak money out of my titio to pay for shit they use, and i dont. and you are right, i know nothing about athletes, however you saying im a coward is like what the fuck, not only because its fucking stupid, but because it doesnt even fit in your argument. for all i know they have it set whle i dont, and to have extra privileges for being athletes is dumb. thats MY OPINION, however COWARD or EXXAGERTED it might be. but if it pisses you off, them im glad.
by the way, are you a athlete?

I thought of cowardice because that's what most bullies are. (You were being a bully) They are cowards who know nothing else but to pick on the lesser group of the pack so they'd feel good about themselves. You feel you are better than people who only know how to make it through this school by throwing a ball around. So what if that's the only thing they know? Who are you to be judging their self-worth at this University like that in the first place? You have a one set mind here. You keep saying they're treated exceptionally well than everyone else. This is the way I look at it. You mentioned the chem. and Bio. dept. hauls in a lot of money, yes, but look at it this way: is that what you hear being announced around campus in fliers? Do you hear them say to the students to come out and wear their shirts to support anything other than the team? Do you see people come from different towns or have tail-gate parties in honor of anything other than the team? It's popularity, really. It's the people-appeal that draws them all in. I'm not saying yours is worth nothing or bad just that face it, when it comes down to it, be unfair as it may, a lot of the times it's football, or volleyball that draws the attention. Yes, it is sad that's it's that way. You guys should get more attention along with other areas. I'm just pointing out the reality gist of the whole thing. I wasn't mad by the way. Just disappointed that someone who seemed so clever came up with such a narrow-minded assumption. I'm not an athlete but I work with a lot of them. I do work at the gym, ya know. Oh, and I comment all the time here. Just haven't lately. Good to be back. (haha)

Regarldless of the fact that they "bring in the money" mimi, they shouldn't be given special privilages. You argue it like if it is deemed okay. And saying that it is the "reality of it" and letting it be makes it no different either. That is like saying "well there are Ugandans using child soldiers out there, but that is the reality of it, and we can't stop them, so might as well let it be". The fact of the matter is, Athletes being given special privilages is not something that should be done. Ergo it is always something that should be frowned down upon and is wrong.
Now, Student Athletes aren't always that bad, some are actually pretty smart and may actually have a high GPA. I'm not sure about this, but I've already shown Fredo the article that Bollock wrote about underground Rap in the paper (starring yours truly :EGO BOOST!:) There's also Kiera's ex who was in football and really smart and what not. See, if they can do it, I'm sure there can be student athletes that can too.

Oh please spare me with the "it's not right" speech. It's not right that there are students on campus that pay professors money for their grade but it happens here anyway. Of course it's not okay but it happens. And it's ridiculous that you compare it with children soldiers. That's inhumane not foolish like arguing over the politics of student athletes. Everyone who has some sort of position here on campus have some sort of perks with it.

Ok now this comes into something that kinda pisses me off. I agree it's not right to generalize about the smarts or lack there of pertaining to student athletes. but i definatley DO NOT agree with them getting money from MY tuition to fund athletics. i don't remember the exact amount (and the b/g connection website is down at the moment) but i think it's a little over 100 dlrs. of MY money. if football and baseball and ect.. bring in so much damn money why can't they fund themselves? or fine howcome there isen't an Engineering fee for the entire campus. we need money too, but when we need part for a robot or go to a convention or do anything that helps us LEARN, (something i think universities were started for) and/or helps us get jobs later WE have to have a car wash or sell t-shirts or something. i don't see the student athelete population paying for my materials so why should i pay thiers?? i don't get financial aid and those 100 dlrs would be nice to buy a book or something i paid 500+ in 4 books this year. i can't afford to pay for new equip. for any sports team in school. i'm all for everybody getting an education and/or playing sports. people need to be entertained but not out of MY pocket.

Sorry Mimi, but with you, extreme examples have to be used for you to get the point. And yet still, you're so thickheaded to not get it. You still say things like "spare me the :extreme example:" don't you get it? Athletes are gettin special treatment. Why? Because they bring in money. But just because they bring in the money shouldn't be grounds for them to get special treatment, that is unfair to the rest of the students. and letting it go because it happens all the time makes you no better than the Athletic coordinator who is right up there with the Vice President of the School, moving funds towards the Athletic department.

Yeah, I agree with you. I still remember when we had that choice of voting on which fee we wanted in our tuition. I remember the choices were either the athletic fee one, the music one, and others that I don't remember. I think that's the most important issue outta all this.

First, i agree w/checo's comment not yours. second, screw you Ren. I don't need anyone insulting my intelligence like that. Next off, tell me ren, since you seem to know so much, what are the special priveleges these athletes get anyhow? what have you personally witnessed?

My statement stands. why should i the engineer that has nothing to do with any of these other depts pay for ANYTHING for ANY dept??
Do they pay for my shit ??
no!! so let THEM have bakesales or other similar crap to fund thier activities.
you seem to have ignored my argument of "if they make so much money for us..." from a buisness stand point a buisness that does not even generate enough money to operate itself goes BANKRUPT and it closes. but then again i'm no buisness major.

sorry i havent posted. i have to remind you that i do bust my balls to pass in this fucking school.
now talk about being narrominded. for someone who tells me that they take any intake on an opinion, you truly are a wee bit pissed at an opinion. so there you have it, you are the narrominded one who cant even cope with an opion that (yes i fucked up an generalized, but i accept it) just because you dont see why athletes get a better treatment.
and yes checo, you are fucking right, let them make cakes or something and sell them. its retarded to assume that a club per se cannot fund itself if they rack in so much money. which leads me back to the chem department, they have so much money they fund themselves. whereas we have to go and make injsulting stickers to make enough money to try and get a job, while the athletes have it set in school.
in regards to this: "Oh please spare me with the "it's not right" speech. It's not right that there are students on campus that pay professors money for their grade but it happens here anyway. Of course it's not okay but it happens. And it's ridiculous that you compare it with children soldiers. That's inhumane not foolish like arguing over the politics of student athletes. Everyone who has some sort of position here on campus have some sort of perks with it." que?!
and no its no ridiculous, its the same way you set up my opion against yours. jesus fucking christ, its an opinion lady. cope with it, its my way of seeing shit, and may it be as wrong as you want thats the way I am. reread the post and look at the
amount of fucking "I's" in the post.
now im off to make my formula sheet for math, because i cant get a passing grade for handling a ball.

cheers

I don't understand how I'm narrow-minded? I was mad at ren's comment on ME not the opinion itself. Not once did I say that the whole thing that everyone seems to make a point about is "okay with me." I've simply been pointing out how it happens and the possibilities on why it happens and that's that. Plus I KNOW how they get treated, what goes on with them when it comes to grades and GPAs. I agreed that they shouldn't be taking our money to pay for their things. I know it's an opinion and I was just stating mine. Mine which is basically that it happens, a lot of shit happens that I've heard and even witnessed but no one is doing ANYTHING about it. We can all complain here all day how it's unfair but that's all it'll ever be, just complaints. So what I'm really trying to say it that unless you're doing something about it then NO it doesn't matter cause it happens and it will continue to happen...

mimi: student athelets should not get any special treatment for handling a ball

Ok I talk about "student"-athletes the way I talk about white people, black people, asians and mexicans (including all hispanics). I am making wide generalizations that appear to be true in most cases. So when I say "student"-athletes are dumb you know what I mean. Its not completely their fault. They have been getting breaks througout their entire education. Chris Rock said, "Black man plus basketball equals C plus." This causes them to be unprepared when they get to college and makes them willing to accept easy majors and courses. I know the school would be a very different place without sports. I disagree with Checo that they don't give anything to us engineers. Engineers are part of the alumnae that go to all the football games and hand over large checks once homecoming starts and some of those checks are actually earmarked for the engineering department. That's just how higher education works. But I still disagree with all the passes the "student"-athletes get. If you want examples look at the original post. Athletes get more guidance than any other student on campus. They get a ton of tutors and they get advisors that tell them what are the easiest classes to take. I have seen athletes skip tests because they have an away game (I mean skip not take it later or sooner). I have also seen them miss deadlines for papers in English classes. If you don't believe me try talking to some of the athletes they love to brag about some of the breaks they get. I also disagree with my tuition going up to get a athletic building that I will never use (and don't forget that the athletes will get more access to it even if i wanted to use it), but I am open to the democratic process so I guess there's not much we can do about it now. But I reserve the right to bitch. And I reserve the right to make fun of dumb athletes just like I make fun of everybody. I mean if I make fun of the mentally handicapped I can make fun of football players.
